Tempo qua, Tempo là

This series of activities is based on a learning scenario about the weather in Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century, National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project, Lawrence, KS: Allen Press, 1999, p. 323. Permission to use granted by ACTFL.

Objective
  • Students learn about weather and climate in various regions of Italy
  • Students demonstrate knowledge of and correctly use weather expressions in original projects
  • Students learn how weather and topography in Italy affect vacation plans, activities

Graphic Organizer Activity

  • Students review vocabulary relating to the weather and seasons, activities. Using visuals as prompts, students tell what they like to do during each season using weather descriptors.

Internet Activity

Using the following web site, students will view a topographical map of Italy and become familiar with the regions of Italy http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/europe/italy_rel96.jpg

Working in groups, students will select three cities (one each in the north, central and southern regions) and compare the daily weather conditions for each (Students could also look for highest/lowest temperatures among all listed cities. Students could then do the same for the United States.)

Graphic Organizer Activity

Students create a bar graph depicting the weather in various regions of Italy. Students could then do a bar graph comparing highest/lowest temperatures in Italy vs. United States

Break students into groups of three and have each group pick one geographical region to investigate and report back to class:

View an Italian weather report. On second viewing, provide students with a discrete item worksheet.


Students review their KWHL chart and add any new information.
